Irritable bowel syndrome is a gastrointestinal condition which is chronic in nature. There is no cure but it is manageable.
An individual with IBS van have the following symptoms namely
- Abdominal pain, cramps, discomfort
- Diarrhoea or constipation in alterations
- Belching .
- Incomplete bowel movement or evacuation.
The management of this condition is done through dietary interventions, medical interventions and finally surgical interventions based on the requirements.
- The client had to be provided a diet rich in soluble fiber. This can increase the gastric contents and relieve constipation.
- The client is encouraged to take a low FODMAP diet (Fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols) This can help to identify which food suits or acceptable by the patient condition and which food does not suit the patient. It also helps to know the triggering foods causing symptoms and enable to segregate those foods from the diet plan.
- Encourage the client to take adequate probiotics in the diet. This can improve the GUT health by increasing the good bacteria of intestine.eg., yogurt, kimchi.

- If the client is suffering from diarrhoea, educate client to avoid foods containing sorbitol, as this will lead to diarrhoea.
- Inform the client to add oats and linseed in case if symptoms of bloating or wind.
- Educate the client to avoid alcohol, beverages, fizzy drinks as this can irritate the gastric mucosa and lead to abdominal discomfort and pain.
- Inform client is restrict tea or coffee less than three times a day, as they are caffeinated can irritate the gastric lining and increase symptoms.
- Educate the client to take food at scheduled time and not to skip meals. This helps the gastrointestinal system to function timely and avoid overload.
The dietary interventions for a client with irritable bowel syndrome focus on low FODMAP diet, right fiber, adequate hydration, avoiding allergic foods and triggers, no alcohol beverages or fizzy drinks, no skipping of meals or excessive diet intake at a time to improve the quality of life.
