The small intestine is responsible for the majority of nutrient absorption due to its large surface area and the presence of specialized structures that aid in absorption. The walls of the small intestine are lined with finger-like projections called villi, which increase the surface area available for nutrient absorption. The villi are covered with even smaller projections called microvilli, which further increase the surface area.

In addition to the presence of villi and microvilli, the small intestine also contains specialized cells that are responsible for nutrient absorption. These cells, called enterocytes, absorb nutrients and transport them into the bloodstream, where they can be distributed to the body’s cells and tissues.

The stomach, mouth, and large intestine also play important roles in the digestive process, but they are not primarily responsible for nutrient absorption. The stomach breaks down food using acid and enzymes, but most nutrient absorption occurs in the small intestine. The mouth mechanically breaks down food and begins the process of chemical digestion with the enzyme amylase, but only a small amount of nutrient absorption occurs in the mouth. The large intestine absorbs some water and electrolytes, but it primarily serves to store and eliminate waste products.
